My son just informed me that he got us tickets to the game against tOSU. He’s coming up from Florida, and we’ll celebrate his birthday the day before the game. There is some comfort in knowing that your team really has no business making a competitive game out of it, let alone expecting to win. The opponent will be great, the atmosphere amazing, and the chance to go to another Beav game with my son, the first since he and his family moved to Florida last summer... priceless. He’s an amazing young man, and I’m a blessed dude.
I’m looking forward to seeing the “new Beavs”, and to hearing ideas for good places to eat and frequent from some of the rest of you as the game gets closer, and connecting up with the rest of Beaver Nation in Ohio. I’m stoked!

tOSU is a definite body bag game for this team, but we've done those before and it hasn't been all bad. I went to the LSU game in 2004 and to PSU in 2008, had a ball both times and I expect gameday in Columbus to be amazing too. Hope you and your son have an unforgettable time.
I'm all for optimism, but I'm afraid you're right about what to expect. Unlike the 2004 team that took Nick Saban's defending national champ LSU team to OT, I'm not seeing players on this squad of the caliber that we had in that game (Anderson, Hass, Swancutt). But our kicking should be better. (Sorry- too soon?)

I have been told by multiple fans of multiple teams in and out of the B10 that tOSU is a giant arrogant bowl of asshats. One fan who had traveled to both, said, "think Autzen time 2.5, but with the actual history to back up the arrogance". In any case, our group will have a great time.

I used to work with an Ohio State graduate. I just kept hammering on the fact that Oregon State is older than Ohio State, which makes Oregon State, the original OSU. The Civil War is older than Michigan-Ohio State. Oregon State basketball is historically a much better basketball school. So, if you take the big three sports in tandem (football, basketball, and baseball), Oregon State is actually more accomplished athletically. Ohio State's biggest loss in Ohio Stadium since 1946 (and second-biggest loss in Ohio Stadium, outside of the 1946 Michigan game) was 41-6 to Purdue in 1967. Oregon State beat that Purdue team 22-14 in West Lafayette. Knocking a bunch of arrogant asshats down to size is fun. Especially, when you know what buttons to push.

When I lived in Pacific Beach (San Diego) many moons ago, the bars started aligning with college football teams, and Ohio State was one of the first at I think it was Moondoggies. I didn't go near that place on a Saturday, the girls were cool, the guys were eventually drunk dickheads. Even the ND fans up at Shore Club were better to be around. I swear I was rooting so hard for Miami to beat Ohio State in the NC game back in 200whatever just because Ohio State fans were such tools.
I'd still go just to say I've done it. Not sure the Horseshoe is in top 5 college stadiums I'd like to visit, rather go to Penn State than Ohio State, but still an awesome experience all the same.
Good luck and have fun Beavs

My daughter told me something similar about tOSU fans. Her basis for this is that one of her good friends who graduated from the teaching program at our OSU is from Ohio and an obnoxious Buckeyes fan. She said her entire family lives in Columbus and is even worse, and that they simply reflect the approach of 100,000 on game day. We will choose to enjoy the experience, and appreciate one of the most storied programs in college football history, and take in what has got to an overwhelming vibe in the Horseshoe. If the Beavs compete with these guys reasonably well (I.e. 35-14), considering the hole that’s been dug in our program’s development, the perpetual road losing, the need for talent upgrades at most positions and the inevitable first game glitches for a brand new staff, I’ll consider it icing on the cake!

Ouch! Buckeye fans aren’t so different from any other fan. I was in Columbus for three years while my wife did a Master program there. Yes, they talk football on the local news nearly all year long. Yes, nothing but a national title will content them. Yes, they hate Michigan, like we hate the Ducks. But pretty much, if you go into enemy territory, you should expect to get harassed.
As for places to eat, drink, and enjoy yourself, Columbus has plenty. But we were too poor to enjoy the big city life back then and had two little ones to boot. I know Graeters is good ice cream! ;-) They didn’t have any craft beers back then (2000-2003) or many coffee shops, but I hear that has changed.

The thing that has impressed me are the reports from trips to Baton Rouge and Madison, where our fans couldn’t say enough about the hospitality. I’ve heard comments along the same lines from fans visiting Reser, too. Since I don’t like giving visiting fans grief when they come to Corvallis, I definitely don’t appreciate it when they give it to me. It’s funny considering how fiery I was as an athlete that I have such low tolerance for smack in the stands, but for some reason it’s always been that way. A little good-natured razzing is fine, but when it gets mean-spirited and classless (and each of us has our own definition of what constitutes both) then I have no use for it and it taints the experience for me.

I have no idea what the fan experience is like inside the Horseshoe as we couldn’t afford the tickets and TV is pretty good. But I’ve been in Reser and Gill and I’ve heard rambunctious fans yelling at Lute Olsen or Duck fans giving us grief during the Civil War. And last year, I saw an OSU fan try to square up with a Portland State fan. (Yes, the PSU fan was loud, but the OSU fan was dumb and the instigator.) Fans are fans. In my experience, if you treat those around you with the dignity you wish to receive, you’ll get it.

I live in Columbus (about a 10 minute drive to the stadium any day but game day) and have never been to a Buckeyes' game. But I have heard of a lot of instances of douche bag tOSU fans. Obviously Michigan fans get it the worst, but I've heard of fans of other teams who haven't had good experiences. I really think the reason goes beyond them usually being a good team and to the fact that there are a lot of people in Columbus who were born here, go to college here, and that still live here. So though the city as a whole has made leaps and bounds since I've lived here (arrived in 2001), for a large population it is a college town and football games are a chance to get tailgate and get drunk no matter their age. But hopefully you don't run into any real prick fans, and if that is the case it certainly is an incredible atmosphere. I have gone to people's tailgate parties and walked around the stadium on game day and it is pretty impressive. Hopefully you have a good experience and the Beavers have at least a couple of highlights.

I know I can’t control how other fans behave, and I don’t have to allow anyone else to dictate how much I enjoy the experience. I’ve seen a fair number of Beav road games through the years, and the only time I hated it was when we played in Autzen the year that Yvensen was out at RB, and Gundy was the starting QB because Moore was hurt (2007?). The game was brutal - only surpassed by the ignorance and garbage spewed by duck fans. Awful experience. I won’t go back to that cesspool!

Man, time flies, doesn’t it? The trauma remains fresh. The 2008 and 2009 Civil Wars were so traumatic that they block out all of the other Civil Wars before them.
