The late 60s defenses of Dee Andros were very stout as well. I think their DC had the last name of Riley, and a DB coach by the name of Rich Brooks.

Who was OSU's defensive coach on the 1964 Rose Bowl team under Tommy Prothro? That was probably the best defensive team the Beavs have had. Back in 1964, Protho's staff consisted of: Bob "Tiger" Zelinka Senior Assistant Coach and Offensive Coordinator Ron Siegrist Offensive Line Assistant Coach (Siegrist blocking back for Oregon State in 1955 after playing two years under Kip Taylor in 1952 and 1953) Jerry Long Assistant Coach (Long played guard at Oregon State in 1946 and 1947 and later was a line coach both before and after, but it is unclear what he coached in 1964) Bobb McKittrick Linebackers and Tight End Assistant Coach (McKittrick played guard at Oregon State from 1955-1957, winning two Pacific Coast Conference titles and finishing second in 1955) John Cooper Assistant Coach (Cooper was a defensive coordinator later and then a head coach) Joe Francis Assistant Coach (Francis played tailback at Oregon State from 1955-1957, winning two Pacific Coast Conference titles and finishing second in 1955)
As I understand things, for most of the games, Prothro called all of the plays from the booth and also made all of the substitutions. So, there was no real Defensive Coordinator. There also was no real offensive coordinator. Zelinka was more of a 30,000 foot game-planning tactition, who used game film a lot, while Prothro was more a nuts-and-bolts coach that made the general strategy that Zelinka had mapped out work.
To the extent that there was a defensive coordinator, it was probably John Cooper, although, he was only 27 at the time. Cooper followed Prothro to UCLA, where he served in about the same capacity. UCLA won the AAWU in 1965 and defeated #1 Michigan State in the Rose Bowl in 1966. When Cooper moved over to Kansas in 1967, he was completely in charge of the defense. In year two, Kansas won the Big 8 for the first time since 1947 (and, presently, the last time in school history), narrowly losing the 1969 Orange Bowl to #3 Penn State, 15-14.
Pepper Rodgers bolted from Kansas back to UCLA following the 1970 season and left Cooper at Kansas. After a year with the new regime, Cooper went to Kentucky. He survived a head coaching change and built Kentucky up to win the SEC Championship for the only time since 1950. At season's end, he coached the defense to a 21-0 over #18 North Carolina in the Peach Bowl (the Wildcats' first bowl game since 1951 and, presently, Kentucky's biggest bowl victory in school history). The Wildcats went on probation in 1977, so Cooper took over the head coaching spot at Tulsa. Kentucky went undefeated in SEC play but were both ineligible to win the SEC Championship and ineligible to play in a bowl game. The Wildcats finished sixth in the AP Poll at season's end, four spots behind #2 Alabama, the SEC Champion. Kentucky outscored the five common opponents (Georgia, LSU, Misssissippi State, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt) by 95 points, compared to Alabama's 85 points.
Cooper took over Tulsa. After three years of middling results, Cooper won five consecutive Missouri Valley Conference titles. Cooper then took over the head coaching spot for Arizona State, winning the Pac-10 for the first time ever in 1986 and beating #4 Michigan 22-15 in the Rose Bowl. In 1985, Arizona State finished third but was invited over Arizona to the Holiday Bowl, losing by one to #12 Arkansas on a last minute field goal. In 1987, Arizona State finished fourth in the Pac-10 and beat Air Force in the Freedom Bowl 33-28 after almost blowing a 33-14 lead with less than three minutes left. Cooper left to go to Ohio State. Arizona State would not play in another bowl game for another 10 years.
Cooper took over Ohio State and won the Big Ten three times, losing on tiebreakers twice: 1993 and 1998. The Buckeyes won the Holiday, Rose, and Sugar Bowls in the years that Ohio State won the Big Ten title. Ohio State's win in the 1997 Rose Bowl, stopped Arizona State from winning the National Championship. The Buckeyes lost the last pre-BCS Sugar Bowl to Florida State and won the first BCS Sugar Bowl against Texas A&M. Outside of the three year Rose, Sugar, and Sugar Bowls, Ohio State played in two Hall of Fame Bowls, a Liberty Bowl, three Florida Citrus Bowls, a Holiday Bowl, and an Outback Bowl, finishing .500 one season and below .500 for the first time since 1966 in another season. Cooper finished 2-10-1 against Michigan and was fired after loss #10. Jim Tressel took over and found success in year two.

There is a bit of video on Youtube showing how close run the Penn State win over Kansas was. After that win, Joe Paterno would firmly plant the Nittany Lion flag into the middle of national championship contention. Kansas faded with a bit of goodness coming when Nolan Cromwell was the QB but that was it for them. Had the Jayhawks won that Orange Bowl, perhaps Lawrence instead of State College becomes the location of the Next Team On The Rise. Winning the big ones always helps keeping the recruiting on a roll.
The Kentucky team you referenced went 10-1. The major star on it was Art Still, who wound up being a tremendous DL in the NFL. Had Kentucky been Alabama in terms of reputation and history, maybe those NCAA sanctions that knocked out their best ever football team would not have been handed down. Not many universities can boast top flight football and basketball teams and the Wildcats were certainly all that in roundball.

His son Ladd was in my fraternity and his dad was in town, came for dinner. Bob at the time was coaching offensive line for the 49ers and had at least a couple Super Bowl rings on that I remember. It was very cool. I was on kitchen duty and we were having spaghetti. Our real cook had disappeared and even his wife didn’t know where he was so we had a senior that took over the duties for the rest of the year. The spaghetti pasta for 100 was going to take some time to cook so we decided we had time to go play basketball. Of course, you had to win by two and the game went on and on until our cook “Belly” said “oh my God, the spaghetti” and ran in and took it off the stove. It had the consistency of oatmeal, but didn’t taste nearly as good. I was a freshman, and he told us servers it’s OK, we have plenty of sauce, so just cover it all with sauce so they can’t see it. We served it all and basically everybody summarily rejected it except for Coach McKittrick. He asked for seconds! We thought that was one of the funniest things of all time. Two Super Bowl rings and they must not have that great of food in the NFL!

That's something somebody who had a weak dad would say. Did he make you squat when you'd pee? Wear a dress? Kill Giants? Sing the d@ck fight song? Drive a Honda? What was it, homie? Why so angry? You mad, bro? Getting personal over a friendly debate when there is nothing relevant to add is "weak"... Sure those aren't your own sad memories from your childhood with your dad??? FLASHBACKS!!!!!'

Sigh.... ok. It's not actually getting personal when the insults are this cartoonishly generic.. getting offended over this level of sarcastic comment is like getting mad about "yo mama so fat" jokes. Outrage is not good currency around here... we already have mods, we don't need a ton of posters running around being the PC Police. Others have tried, it doesn't work out well. Focus on contributing to the conversation.

I am terribly sorry for your loss. That really does suck. But this is what I am gonna say. We are all anonymous people shootin' the s%#t on the interwebs here. To OA's point, G20's burn was exactly in the zip code of a "yo momma" or "that's what she said" or "that's what your mom/sister said last night" or any number of meaningless, off the cuff burns that are bantered about in both popular culture and in a large number of social circles. remarks that would be fired off by anybody... I don't have a sister, but do you know how many random people on the internet have told me they have banged her? What would be flat unacceptable is if you two knew each other in the real world. If he knew your history. That is a low blow. But, if you guys have no idea who you are, then the zing is what it is... a low brow, off the cuff little jab. One that unfortunately hits close to home for you. I highly doubt G20 hired a PI and did some deep web investigation to find your life story and hurt you. You are perfectly in your right to be hurt and offended by it, but I would say it would be an exercise in emotional maturity to examine the motivation and context around the remark... I find it unlikely he knew this. All of us have things that are off limit to us, but not to others. All of us have our triggers and our hot buttons. Nobody else knows what they are. Less we walk down the path of 100% zero shot taking or joke making, and everybody at all times must hold hands and get along... somebody is going to offend somebody else with a comment they (and a lot of others) would probably find harmless. I don't think anybody should be walking on eggshells here. If somebody fires one across your bow that is too close to home, PM them and let them know. if they don't apologize and reverse course, then yeah... they are a piece of s%#t. All of us should exert a little levity.

I was trying to point out the stupidity of name calling and put downs on the message bored. What if baseball1111 has severe atrophy in his arms, legs and wedding tackle? Calling him weak would be a low blow that hits too close to home, wouldn't it? You wouldn't have known in advance that he can't curl the remote, walk up stairs or that his gentleman's sausage is al dente unless the beavs are beating an SEC team in the post season.
Now I don't wanna go off in a rant here, but you called him weak. I responded that your dad was weak and followed that up with an explanation and example of how silly it was. You called me an un-classy ass hat. Which is probably true, but I responded with more silliness. If you think I was really going after you, you'd be mistaken.
The entire point of this is that internet tough guy, name calling and s%#tty put downs on this bored should come to an end. Disagree all you want, but back it up with some actual dialogue, not just 3rd grade BS.
But that's just my take, I could be wrong.
P. S. I am a pretty leniant moderator. Also, sorry for the loss of your father. I know it sucks. I meant literally no ill will.
