I don't blame the coaches for the second half debacle. The coaches didn't hold on 2nd and 4 on a nice drive...they didn't jump offsides...push off on a defender to catch the ball...drop several passes to extend drives...miss wide open receivers...etc. Players execute the plays...or they don't. We shot ourselves in the foot... The players need to play better and stop the mistakes in key situations. But, the coaches did call a fake punt on their own thirty in a tied game. They need to make a better decisions.

Maybe a few things he could have said better, but some of that can be chalked up to how the reporter framed it and wrote the piece. The headline gives that away.

Of course the fact that Niner insisted on playing Luton the entire 2nd half had NOTHING to do with the loss.

Principal: I wouldn’t trust that kid as far as I could throw him. Grace: Well, with your bad knee Ed, you shouldn’t be throwing anybody. It’s true...

Smith is not Anderson 2.0
He was recruited by Riley, shaped by Erickson as a player and then taught how to coach by Peterson.
I admit, I don't know much about Peterson's style but I can speak to Erickson and Riley.... Erickson told it like it is. He didn't polish much or try to hide much.
And why are we assuming the coaches haven't talked to Noah about making the catch? If you don't think the coaches are talking to him and coaching him up on that outside of the media..... I can't help you.
How about this... ask Noah if he should make those catches and I'll buy ya lunch if he doesn't agree.
The truth is the truth... hopefully it is shared with scenarist and wrapped in care/love. But don't be afraid of the truth. Some people say the truth will set you free!

And what's so "mysterious and romantic" about continuing to play an ineffective QB when you have a chance to win a game (finally). Luton was killing us in the 2nd half. So even if he sits for only a series or two, what's the harm? Smith needs to wake up and start looking at his own role in the loss.

I don't feel like he blamed the loss on Noah, but he did evaluate overall play as subpar and specifically his repeated failure to catch the ball as a problem in the passing game.
I am sure it isn't anything everyone in that lockerroom had not already heard.

Were you even around when Matt Moore threw 5 or 6 interceptions over to Arizona State? You are exaggerating. Killing us? No way

My thoughts after listening to the press conference:
Regarding the fake punt, Smith said they weighed the risks and felt that worst case scenario was that they would give up a FG and have all their timeouts and 2+ minutes on the clock if it didn't work out, and they felt that was an acceptable situation with their offense. I disagree with this, but his thought process was sound. He weighed the risks, knew what would happen if they didn't get it, and rolled the dice. Said he's always going to err on the side of aggression, so get ready for more of this in the future I would guess.
A friend of mine pointed out that Smith was criticized for using too many RBs in week 1, then not using AP enough in game 2. While I would've loved to see AP get more carries, it's not like Jermar sucked by any stretch of the imagination. I'm biased because AP is probably my favorite Beaver since James Rodgers, but I would've liked to see him get a few more carries. Jermar had 16 carries in the second half. 5 of his first 8 carries were for 5+ yards. Only one of his last 8 went for 5+ (his 9th carry). Fatigue? Maybe, but also could've been offensive line fatigue or a host of other factors.
If Gebbia doesn't see significant time vs. Cal Poly, I'm going to have to start taking everything Smith says with a grain of salt. If he's really "a guy we can score with" as Smith has said over and over again, there's no reason he shouldn't be seeing the field in this game. I assume we'll be up big, give him some reps. If we're not up big, it's probably because the offense is sputtering, in which case 1B should be out there running the show to see if he can get it jumpstarted.
Penalizing guys a half a game for punching people on the field seems light. I would've liked to see a full game suspension, but I don't really know the dynamics of what was going on in either situation, so I'll trust Smith's judgement for now.
Had Smith gone after Jesiah Irish for not catching balls or some other freshman, then I think you're correct that it's probably not the right move. Togiai, however, is a senior who has had plenty of time on the field. I've been hearing how this guy is a pro prospect for almost half a decade. He has 63 catches in 24 games over parts of 5 seasons. He's never made it through a season healthy. Without going back and watching, play-by-play indicates he was targeted 6 times with 3 catches, one of which being the final play of the game which shouldn't really count since Hawaii let him catch the ball essentially. So we'll say 2 catches and 5 targets. On all three of the incompletions, Hawaii is credited with a pass breakup, so not sure if Togiai really just didn't catch the ball. I'd have to go back and watch. Anecdotally it seems I can remember far more Togiai mistakes than solid plays, but the stats do show he's had a couple solid games over the years with 5+ catches and 60+ yards receiving, which is pretty much all I want out of a tight end.

I don't remember the rule so maybe someone else does - if the punches happened before time expired and a player was ejected, is the mandatory suspension a half or full game? I was thinking it's a half, but could certainly be wrong. I sort of assumed they were more or less following P12 protocol. Now if helmets were off and it was a LaGarette Blount situation, I'd feel a lot differently about 1/2 game of course.

JMHO but the failure of our OC to adjust to Hawaii's defensive adjustments in the 2nd half probably had more to do with the outcome than JL's play..... Go Beavs!!
