Looks like DM was looking to point a finger at something to justify entering the transfer portal. I will believe the collective over a player. DM isn't irreplaceable. DM acts like the collective should have bought him everything(house, car, etc.). Too much Me, Me, Me, and not of enough of We, We, We. And, like all the other NIL BS... never promised $400k... never got close to $100k... I'm guessing most of what he got was the car lease. House, another... what, better car? Who knows the whole story, but DM comes off as a perfect transfer candidate. See ya! And... he'll be the very first player I'll actual follow to see what becomes of him. My guess is that I'll be shaking my head in "I told ya so" mode. As soon as they allowed 3rd party agents into the NIL crap it was over. As stated earlier... by lots of us in differing ways... a few benefit the rest taken advantage of.

"...Martinez was provided an automobile between his freshman and sophomore seasons through an endorsement deal with an automobile dealership. Months later, Martinez wanted a different car..." The entitlement mentality is off the charts. These guys are admittedly very talented at their sport. But, universities achieve greatness not because of primadona athletes...but rather because they prepare bright young minds for meaningful lives. I love being a sports fan, but some perspective comes in handy. This is the real reason why NIL, portal, etc. got started. It has been hiding behind the NCAA making "gazillion's of dollars" off of certain athletes narrative, but IMO, this is the real reason. Not saying the money making by the NCAA did not happen, because it clearly did. But, as the old expression goes, two wrongs do not make a right. Even without NIL money, there are a lot of "fringe benefits" that come with being a D1 athlete. In addition to a free ride for four years.
On the second point, that is indeed the goal. Kind of hard to convince the current crop of 18-22 year olds influenced by current culture that this has the same value as when we were in school.

I'm not sure what you mean by "current crop", but I believe that the typical college student is (even today) looking to gain skills to prepare them for meaningful, successful lives. My grandson is a current OSU Freshman and I can guarantee you that he hasn't turned up his nose at an automobile because it just wasn't right. Instead he's working his butt off in a rigorous academic program. There's thousands of OSU students in Corvallis doing the same. The Damien Martinez's are the 1% of the 1%.

Well... there's a lot in your post, but I'm only going to comment on a portion. The NCAA makes $, but it is a nonprofit. Do some people make too much? Is there wasted $? Is it inept in some ways? All true, but it is a non profit and most of the $ earned goes back to support schools and athletes. My un-researched understanding is that NIL erupted from a lawsuit over companies, EA Sports(?), making huge dollars off name, image, likeness. I've never understood how it became what it is?! Fine... if a company want you to endorse or be part of something they should pay up. But, not schools in terms of having to have collectives that intend aren't making money from an athlete's NIL.

Totally anecdotal, it just seems like there is more and more of the entitlement mentality coming from many young people, and society in general. Hopefully your grandson once out of school can continue that work ethic, many many employers I have talked with tell me it is a rare commodity these days.

Who knows unless they release the info. If it was "less than 100k" but still substantial, and they are required to withhold any taxes, it could make sense that they were on track to get him the promised 400k. Even if it wasn't 400k promised, should a kid be expecting to get it all up front? Buying a house on NIL money? Is that a good idea? In Corvallis a small house can get you into a pretty hefty long term monthly PITI payment. I forsee a bunch of kids could get themselves into credit or tax debt due to poor money handling of NIL proceeds of their own doing.

I, for one, believe Damien is getting some poor advice. But that's his problem, time will tell. Sad when virtually the only school to show any interest in him was us.

Not just OSU, for every school in this country. even ones with means.

Gawd I hope this whole thing didn't erupt just because somebody couldn't do math or understand how taxes and withholding works. But you might be right. A quarterly payment of $100k could easily be reduced to $70k after federal and state tax withholdings. If there's butthurt because $70k isn't $400k....ugh, that's some serious lack of brainpower, right there... Maybe that's not it, but it does make you wonder....

The article never states an amount... total or quarterly amount. It does state it was no where near $400k... nor $100k.
One of the reasons new contacts have to be written so either side does not lie... not fulfill or use false terms to negotiate more.
I can tell you for a fact other than negotiating merch deals (car lease, etc), small qtrly stipends neither collective has $400k to give one player. They don't have $100k... unless one counts lease valuation etc. And, those running either wouldn't promise what they couldn't deliver. Our collectives are above board and realistic what they can and can't do.
