I refuse to accept that better than garbage is what we should be aiming for. Just shut the whole thing down if .500 football is our goal. Maybe I missed it someplace earlier, but who do you have in mind to elevate us to that level (7 or 8 wins+ each year). I think that several “retreads” mentioned here can do it. Sometimes young and sexy turns out to be a lot of window dressing with no substance. Sark could recruit the heck out of it in Seattle and LA (anyone could at USC), but he was at best mediocre in his results. Not flaming...I really am curious who you’d like to see become our next head coach and why. Take a shot at least. We're capitulating if we go with Tedford. Look what CAL did. They found an up and comer and now they have a lot of positive energy around a still losing program. Also, the logic that someone has to present a better alternative to a bad option is flawed. My point is easy to digest. Don't take the easy way out. Take a risk that has actual upside.

I think Tedford has changed/matured as a coach. I have watched all of the Fresno St games this season and his demeanor has definitely changed (not as high strung). The other major thing is the way his defense is playing! I also liked hearing from the color commentators during a couple of the games, how much more Tedford is emphasizing defense during practice (dedicating entire periods to turnover drills, technique, situations, etc). It takes a lot for an offensive guy like him to finally admit that the defense is just as important and needs the reps, invested talent and time, just like the offense if you want to win! People also have to remember, that this Fresno St team was 1-11 last season, in the WAC (this is the second time he has taken a 1-11 team that he inherited to a bowl game in his first season)!
I was at a coaching conference many years ago and Tedford was there talking about QB play! Wow! He was incredible! One of the little pieces he shared that I will never forget was about the QB's feet. On their drop steps, instead of letting the legs cross over (like a light carrioca) on drop steps or instead facing both feet perpindicular to the LOS- He has his QB's point and keep their front foot pointed toward the LOS! Why? Because it automatically opens the QB's back shoulder so they can know see their "blind side" in their peripheral vision. Cool stuff! Try it some time. It's a little awkward at first because you are trying to drop step with that front foot open (point straight ahead) but it works!
I'll be honest and this is my opinion but I think Tedford would bring in great coordinators and asst coaches, which would help in recruiting, let alone coaching in general. I also think he could do a lot of great things with the talent that is on this roster currently. I would not expect mediocre at all. I think he would have a really strong showing here for years to come!
Go Beavs!

I personally wouldn't consider someone in their mid 50's to be old. I would love to go back to having a pro-style offense also. He seems to be resonating with players at FSU well enough, and Pete Carroll up in Seattle seems to resonate with his players really well in his 60's. During his time between Cal and FSU, he worked with different programs picking up things from different coaches to improve himself and evolve his approach. He certainly isn't perfect, but he is a lot better than a lot of the other retreads, and he would stabilize our program and bring in a high quality QB and NFL level talent (he brought in Aaron Rodgers, Lynch, Goff, and others at Cal). For you and others who don't want an old coach, how old do you want your coach to be? In their 20's? 30's? Early 40's at the oldest? I personally wouldn't want someone in their 60's, but I think 50's would be fine. He'd be the 2nd oldest coach in the conference. We can quibble about whether or not that means anything, but I don't think it's a positive. We need a jump start, not a tow. He is within 4 years of age with all of the PAC-12 coaches except for 4. I have no problems with an up and coming coach like Smith or Baldwin, but I also don't think Tedford would be a bad choice. I also pay too much in season ticket prices as a recent graduate to tolerate another failure of a HC. I'm about at the point of pulling my season tickets to just watch on TV if we don't make a good hire, or if we continue to suck after the next year or two. I've also been to every home game since 2001 (I was 9 at the time), so getting rid of my season tickets would be a huge change for me. So hiring an up and coming coach is great, but if it's a huge flop then I'm sure there are a lot of others that are like me that will be pulling our season tickets, which is already been happening under Andersen.

I don't think he's leaving Fresno State.

I was never a "Tedford fan," but he's taken a team that was 1-11 last year, and has turned them into a bowl eligible team. Cal isn't the easiest of teams to recruit to (standards, and all), but nearly every year he was at the helm, they were in the conference conversation. I have NO IDEA if he would entertain coming to Corvallis after the CGA debacle, and I know he isn't a spring chicken, but.....the more I see, the more I SEE. Just my take. I don't get the Tedford hate. He is lifetime 88-60 as a college head coach, a hair under 60% winning percentage. 5-3 in bowl games. He averaged 8 wins a year at Cal. Cal isn't exactly a dynasty program ya know? Kind of like us. He is 56, that isn't old. He has a bare minimum of 10 quality years in him. you don't have one foot in the grave at 65 these days anymore. Jeez, did anybody see Pete Carroll sprinting down the sideline for a time out yesterday? He is 66. Dick LeBeau? still calling defenses at 80. and not too shabby of ones. He has put 8 quarterbacks in the NFL. He has had multiple first round pick Quarterbacks. If we need to solve an IMMEDIATE need on this team, it is at Quarterback. I know our defense is terrible, but I think most of what we need there is to not have a total moron running the show. there is some talent their, the coaching and fundamentals are just putrid. Of all the quality, proven head coaches out there that we have a realistic shot at getting. Tedford is easily at the top of the list. He is a good person, the closest thing to a question mark he has on him is some heart trouble a few years ago, which in itself wasn't a super huge deal. There is no baggage there, which isn't anything you can say about the Weasel or McElwain. Of any experienced quality coach we have a shot at getting, Tedford is probably hands down the best and safest pick. I'd pick him well over Baldwin. Mother of god, I hope I'm standing next to Jeff Tedford in every picture I take for the rest of my life. If he's 56, I pass for 39 no problem.
Great post btw

Atown and BB1111 have sold me, I'm all in
TEDFORD BABY! He'd be a great hire for OSU, and I think he'd commit for as long as he wants to coach

tbh, that's chump change, and I'm sure Tedford didn't go back to being a head coach so he can fulfill his dreams of competing in the MWC

The age of 56 is not as big of a concern as the health. He has already shown that the rigors of coaching have contributed to some very scary health situations that required time away. This combined with the fact that the wear appears to have made him age faster (could be genetics) is concerning.
Another concern is the schedule this year. With a schedule that weak (excepting the 2 very difficult games that were not even close losses) you can pull out several victories and win the close ones with some fortunate bounces. At the end of the season the wins look impressive until you delve into it. The defense has yet to stop anyone with an above average offense, with the best performance being against San Diego State. On that note you could actually argue fairly easily that Rocky Long has more quality miles left on him than Tedford despite being older.
Even with these and other concerns I would be happy with a Tedford hire. He has done a lot of good things. I think he is showing currently that he still has more to give.

I get the health scare and that's legit to an extent but the "weak schedule" thing to me doesn't apply because he did the same thing in his first year taking over the Cal program. And that was with a whole PAC 10 schedule. Go Beavs!

And that was with a whole PAC 10 schedule. Go Beavs! The real factor to me in the weak schedule is just about the fortunate breaks portion. I am positive that a better coach has something to do with the breaks, but only partially. Fresno State was some small fortunate breaks away in 2016 from being 7 and 5 rather than 1 and 11. 4 of those games were decided by 7 points or less. So I am positive that rotten luck last year versus better luck this year has contributed to the incredible turn around, but how much I do not know. The turnaround is of less value in my mind because you could have inserted most any coach and seen improvement because of so many bad breaks last year. Now if these close losses last year become blowout wins this year then you have a dramatic change in coaching. This has happened to a degree, but not dramatically. I voice concerns only to look at both sides. I think Tedford would still be a very good hire. His positives outweigh his negatives.

So was Fresno State's schedule last year radically stronger than this year? That seems to be an argument you are making to explain the 11 losses vs the currently bowl eligible season they're having.

Nope, just that a few breaks going your way can radically change the wins and losses in the course of a season. If Fresno State could of figured out how to win the OT game, 2 point loss, 1 point loss, and 5 point loss then Tedford would be looking at a small turnaround rather than a big one. I am not trying to discredit the turnaround, but rather look at all the details. I personally still think the turnaround is impressive.
