I guess it's not the fact that Jonathan Smith is quite possibly our new coach that has me, it's the fact that he is 38, and when JS came to OSU, I was 38 - sigh. Go Beavs! He came to OSU my freshman year at OSU. I am ALL ABOARD THE HYPE TRAIN WHOOOOO-HOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Tweet above says we "Circled back" to JS after a couple weeks... So clearly we were told no by A LOT of other coaches...
I assume even Baldwin, probably backed out after the Civil War shellacking...
So. If niner is the only guy who would step up and take the job, so be it. Sucks that QA put us at such a nadir that Smith is all we could attract, but here we are...
Now go hire a great staff, Jonathan!
As long as we are hiring former Beavs we NEED Heyward and Bray back in Corvallis!!!
Also put me on the bandwagon who would love to se DE or MR mentor Smith through these first couple years. Either in an official role, or unofficial...

Also, for those of you asking the question, "Well what if he didn't have OSU ties?"...
If you haven't noticed we live in reality, and not fantasy land he DOES have OSU ties he DOES resonate with boosters and he DOES fill fans with happy nostalgia... Does that make him a good coach??? of course not, but the AD and Pres would be STUPID to not recognise those attributes and weigh them accordingly...

Again... not sure we will ever be able to accurately assess from who was actually interested and at what price. But, those attributes you mention should NEVER enter into the conversation unless coaching experience, recruiting ability/success, and the ability to collect a great staff are all equal. Hence, if he is the hire sadly not one better coach was interested or in our budget. Sad...

GET ON WHILE TICKETS ARE CHEAP! WHOOOO-HOOOOO BROTHER! Seriously though. I am cautiously optimistic. I think he has the mind for the job, he has a football brain. I think he has the resources available to him to build an good staff. And I know in my soul we will not have the same crazy train bulls%#t that GA gave us. And Smitty will put a quality D-1 QB on the field.

I agree it is sad, and I agree that this is probably the case, but I don't think it had anything to do with our budget... We paid QA and staff >= to Pac-12 average... It's not like Baldwin wasn't about to get a 300% raise coming here... but he still didn't want it (I assume). Either because the task looks too daunting, we are wrong in our talent assesment of the current team and it really is FCS level, or no one wants to follow the CF that was QA

And how do you know they were weighed accordingly? That value should be weighed far far less than the person's ability to field a winning football team. I'd bet my life that he wouldn't be our new HC if he hadn't played here.

But he is ours now and I love him Now go get an AWESOME staff Smitty!!!

I wonder if when Tedford said no thanks, they stayed around and ask him his opinion of Smith? I think you are selling Smith short. I accept he is risky, I accept there are question marks, but I have followed his career since he left OSU. You are not giving him the credit he deserves. Like I said before... A proven names gets you what exactly? Oh, yeah, a 7-23 record and a guy that couldn't recruit his way out of a paper bag. There is a very simple question, but it is actually difficult to answer because you really can't undo history. But, selling his career "short" is not the true issue, nor predicting his apparent future. The true question is... if JS had never been at OSU would ANYONE think a lifetime assistant coach at age 38 with this resume should be OSU's next HC? A HC that is going to be required not only to win, but rebuild an entire mindset of mistrust and underachievement... I can not know other's thoughts... BUT, I am fairly certain to the Nth degree no other candidate with this resume would garner any approval. Probably not, but like Atown said that is part of his resume...the X factor if you will. Chances are he already loves OSU, that will show up in recruiting and to the general public. He knows the life style of Corvallis/OSU, there's a certain attraction to OSU that maybe he can recognize in a recruit. He also know the drawbacks and how to minimize them or cut them off at the pass. And just like Riley did we can go back to that "Family" feel and perception. Will there be a learning curve...sure, but he strikes me as someone with common sense and won't do something stupid...like run off 3 Dl QB and leave us no choice but to settle with one with Dlll talent I bet he fills the stadium
