Who is guaranteed to be a better coach? As we just saw with our previous higher, even coaches with great records from big programs aren't a guarantee of anything.

There is a very simple question, but it is actually difficult to answer because you really can't undo history. But, selling his career "short" is not the true issue, nor predicting his apparent future. The true question is... if JS had never been at OSU would ANYONE think a lifetime assistant coach at age 38 with this resume should be OSU's next HC? A HC that is going to be required not only to win, but rebuild an entire mindset of mistrust and underachievement... I can not know other's thoughts... BUT, I am fairly certain to the Nth degree no other candidate with this resume would garner any approval. Probably not, but like Atown said that is part of his resume...the X factor if you will. Chances are he already loves OSU, that will show up in recruiting and to the general public. He knows the life style of Corvallis/OSU, there's a certain attraction to OSU that maybe he can recognize in a recruit. He also know the drawbacks and how to minimize them or cut them off at the pass. And just like Riley did we can go back to that "Family" feel and perception. Will there be a learning curve...sure, but he strikes me as someone with common sense and won't do something stupid...like run off 3 Dl QB and leave us no choice but to settle with one with Dlll talent I bet he fills the stadium Ok... this is a non-gamblers 3rd bet of the day... although one was with someone else's life. No one is filling our stadium for a while. So, since you were clever enough not to place a time frame it is a chancy bet... but it you say anytime next year you're on!! LOL

We can fill the stadium if we bring back the tarps...

And how do you know they were weighed accordingly? That value should be weighed far far less than the person's ability to field a winning football team. I'd bet my life that he wouldn't be our new HC if he hadn't played here. I'd bet... Yours too I get credit for the assist on that one.

I’m SO GLAD they didn’t do the “Coach in Waiting” thing with DE as head coach and Jonathan Smith the coach in waiting. If he’s ready, give him the job, make him accountable, and like so many others have said - get him some excellent assistants that will work well together.
Would love to see Dennis Erickson involved with an inexperienced head coach. How does this title for DE sound: “Associate Head Coach”? Here for 2 to 3, maybe 4 years and help Jonathan Smith along... Hope I’m right on this guess...something like that. That’s my hunch.

As a player, I used to say that Jon was one of the smartest football minds I had witnessed as a Beaver. Je suis content.

The only thing the "name" and "experience" angle gets you is the ability to cover your ass in the eyes of the media and boosters if it blows up on you. You hire a nobody, and it blows up... you are done as an AD. You hire a big name and it blows up, well "those are the breaks" and "these things happen". Niner ain't my first pick... But I like the potential. We are on the ground floor of the startup, invest early and be a real beaver fan hipster! next thing you know we are dropping 69 points on the duck on our way to securing our playoff spot and all the knuckle draggers will be trying to jump on the train! You were there first! You were a Jonathan Smith fan before it was cool! I nominate me as leader of the fan club.

Sh-t, I am all in. How could Jonathan be any worse than the last fiasco. Besides he is young enthusiastic and an offensive mind. Has had some great mentors...
We could do worse. I was not happy with the Tedford rumors or most of the rest. Some of them were just plain ridiculous.
IF IT'S JONATHAN I MAY CONSIDER SEASON TICKETS AGAIN....

I wonder if he could nab Keith Heyward Johnson for a defense position coach?

Smith coached at Idaho, Montana and BSU before UW. Is that a heck of a lot different/better than Baldwin? /shrug Baldwin has years more experience as an actual professional coach. I don't know where you get the Tom Herman numbers, he was an OC for TEN years before Houston. I loved the Erickson era at OSU and loved Jonathon Smith's time with us but this is an absolute abomination of an opportunity for OSU! Over-react much?

I walk with Jonathon!! And, if you really have an "open mind", you'll join me.... or what's the point of being a fan? GO BEAVS! I'll take that walk. Winning is great, but for me it's also being a mature man. JS is not going to embarrass the Beavs. He won't be jumping up and down and screaming at players, Refs, and coaches. He won't be running the sideline like a sprinter and telling everyone to row the boat, row the boat. That crap gets old real quick, especially when you get stomped on. I didn't watch the Minn & Wisky game so I don't know how fast the Minn. coach was sprinting around. He probably backed off on the boat rowing as the boat was sinking. I hope this rumor is true. My confidence for JS is getting stronger by the minute. I also would prefer that DE was not involved in anyway. That could be a disaster. It would be tough for DE to advise quietly. For me, JS is ten feet tall and bullet proof. He'll shine real good on his own and do the Beavs proud.

I guess it's not the fact that Jonathan Smith is quite possibly our new coach that has me, it's the fact that he is 38, and when JS came to OSU, I was 38 - sigh. Go Beavs! But wiser, I'm sure. He's probably wiser, me, not so much

I wonder if he could nab Keith Heyward Johnson for a defense position coach? Not as simply a position coach .. no.
He goes by Keith Heyward, now.
I may be mis-remembering, but I thought I read something earlier this season where Yvensen Bernard claims that Heyward always wears orange underneath his green & yellow (or previously purple and gold). Sounds like a slam dunk to me.

Well looks like he is a candidate for DC per Danny Moran. Not sure how I feel about that.
