Why would anyone leak the story first to Canzano? The guy that crossed Andersen and uses victims as props. Fire the AD's communication staff.

Does this mean DE is in as the OC or just Consultant. Then who will be the DC? Crazy!

So this is our "Blue Chipper" An inexperienced first time head coach to steer this ship in the right direction. This only makes sense if he is taking over the reigns of a successful program with only the responsibility to keep things going in the right direction. To me this just smells of desperation and Barnes hiring the only person that the fan base would give a chance to due to nostalgia.....I will support the hire but believe we just stalled our turn around efforts by another 3 to 4 years.....

I am okay with this.
Beau Baldwin or Niner is a dice roll. Niner at least has more D-1 and pac-12 experience. Niner has as much OC experience as Tom Herman had when Houston hired him.
Niner coached for Erickson, Riley and Petersen. Some brilliant minds.
All of this is made or broken on his coordinator hires and assistants.

I love how many people believe they can predict the future. I think Smith will put together a solid (if young) staff and hope Erickson has a role.

Jonathan Smith.....smh 28 straight years here we come You mean the QB of the team that broke said streak? Or the QB that took his number 1-4 (in pretty much every preseason poll) ranked team to 5 wins while fans were calling for him to be benched his senior season? My biggest question about Jonathan is does his personality fit for being a head coach. He's a pleasant enough guy and I'm high on his football IQ, and I think he'll put together a good staff, but he's kind of an introvert. How many introverted coaches are making it big at this level? I don"t know.

I don't have a big problem with the hire in the vacuum of "head coach", but my biggest question is going to be with his staff. What kind of connections does he have? Who has he built relationships with over a short career that are going to be excellent hires? Arguably the single biggest thing a head coach can do is the hiring of his DC and OC.

To me this just smells of desperation and Barnes hiring the only person that the fan base would give a chance to due to nostalgia.....I will support the hire but believe we just stalled our turn around efforts by another 3 to 4 years..... Well, we saw what getting us an experienced blue chip head coach with a track record of winning got us. The worst coaching performance in 50 years in America. GA gave Charlie Weis at Kansas a run for his money. I don't think it is desperate. A dozen other more experienced coaches would of come to OSU for the sure $2.5 million a year we would likely offered. Barnes could of easily done the "safe thing" could of easily offered Beau Baldwin and most people would of nodded. Could of gotten somebody with a little bit more "name" But, he took a bit of a gamble, and I think it was calculated. He is young, he is smart, and he could very well be our next 15 year coach... Jonathon Smith has been praised for years as having a brilliant offensive mind and a strong X's and O's. He has a seriously impressive list of QBs he has developed. That is the single biggest need our team has right now. QB development. He has run multiple offensive systems. he can develop a pro offense, a spread offense and a read option offensive if he wants. He has coached under some great names. There are a lot of positives. and since you see examples every single year all over the country that previous success doesn't guarantee a god damn thing... Why not try to catch lightning in a bottle?

Is that a heck of a lot different/better than Baldwin? /shrug Baldwin has years more experience as an actual professional coach. I don't know where you get the Tom Herman numbers, he was an OC for TEN years before Houston.
