how are we feeling on a pair of hot names.
1. Keith Heyward as DC? Personally I like the upside with his recruiting ability and energy. I am concerned he has only experience is as a secondary position coach. Pros probably outweigh the cons. What kind of defense does he run here?
2. Mike "I'm not mediocre YOU are mediocre" Riley. He is moving back to Corvallis and basically said, if Niner asks, he is listening. My thoughts are, I am fine if he has a consulting role. I worry about things if he has an actual coaching title. My main concern is I do not what him to be the shadow head coach and undermine Smith. I don't think he would actively do this, but he is the long time, experienced and savvy coach on a staff that appears to be populated with up and comers. I do think he has a lot of insight he can offer.
Other rumors with steam worth talking about?

I understand the love for Heyward, but I'd really rather see an experienced DC. That being said I don't think he'd be a terrible hire for the reasons listed above. Very luke warm on Riley. I think it time to turn the page, but using Riley as counsel/sounding board would be fine.

Don't think a full group of former OSU players/coaches is the right route, but I'd like to see Trent Bray and Keith Heyward in the mix.

If Mike Riley says he's done with the HCing thing, he just wants to come in and play a role in the Oregon State football program, I'm down for whatever role that is. Are you kidding? Mike Riley is a phenomenal "coach". He'd be an outstanding OC, and the pressure is completely off to be the face of the..well, the university, but mainly the football program. That falls on Smith now.
With that said I can't imagine that happening, but the fact he's offered to step in and help, that's a positive. Mike Riley may be all hip hip hooray, but he's extremely well liked and respected, and I really don't think you ever have to worry about him stepping on anyone's toes.
Give me Mike Riley and any QB in this country that has the talent to play at the next level but needs refinement...any day of the week.

Heyward has worked under some pretty solid defensive coordinators -
2017 Leavitt 2016 Todd Grantham 2014-15 Justin Wilcox (USC version) 2012-2013 Wilcox (UW version) 2008-2011 Banker
Outside of Banker, the one common thread is that they all ran a base 3-4 (as far as I know) - which I'm not loving. But that's certainly not a bad list in terms of building up some great experience along the way.

Bring Coach Cav back to teach our OL how to run block... He sucked at Nebraska, so there’s that.

Compare this kind of plan to what they did att uo ? We are really stepping back, not stepping forward. Is the AD going to invest or continue to gut the program ? The search was like looking for a new home, then purchasing the one next door, then paying off the real estate agent that owned that same home. Now, for assistants, we are just going to sign up all our old neighbors.....cause they are such ' nice' people and they don't need much money. I have lost all faith and can no longer support this circus. I am out of patience and am moving on. I know I will get the snide comments from others - no big deal. I am not fishing for 'likes' or 'thumbs up' clicks, I am just expressing total frustration at what began as a wonderful opportunity with some 'timing' advantages and some actual interest. Since the direction was to tear things down, rather than make a statement... I can no longer support anything football. Some of you will say, ' we can do without your $25.00 per year donation. Well, if that makes you feel good, have at it. In fact, it is quite the opposite situation, but I am withholding money as a sign of total disatisfaction, not because I think this will hurt the program. This is OSU managing their own demise and highlighting their own failures. No matter how much money you have, or how much you put into the football program - I can see absolutely no ROI. I only invest where I can see progress.

Angie Machado on the Dam Podcast yesterday called Keith Heyward a top 5 recruiter in the COUNTRY. I know it’s Angie, but for his recruiting prowess and his experiences, I think he deserves a shot at DC.
Riley as an unpaid consultant on a temporary/as needed basis. I really respect that DE is mindful of not overshadowing niner.
As far as institutional support of football. PLEASE email Ray and Barnes about increasing the allocation to football to at least 30% of the athletic budget. You’ll get a response from Ray, which I really appreciated.

Give me Mike Riley and any QB in this country that has the talent to play at the next level but needs refinement...any day of the week. I wouldn't mind if Riley became QB coach. The college football (and basketball) ranks are full of fired HC's who later became top flight assistant coaches. Riley has an outstanding offensive mind. I always felt that no matter who was the OC or QB coach, it was Riley who was making sure that the offense was in good shape.
On the other hand, I always felt that Riley's system was complex enough that it really took a few years (a redshirt and freshman and sophomore seasons) for QB's to really get his system down. I sometimes wonder if some of the problems at Nebraska was that Riley did not have enough time to get his kind of QB installed and up to speed in his offense. I think a simpler system is needed for a quicker turnaround at OSU. As much as I think people will be patient with Smith, a lot of people, especially those who do not like the hire, will lose their patience quickly if Smith turns in an offense that can't get off the ground.
Other issues with Riley are that he may be past his prime and he may undermine Smith's authority in some people's eyes (especially a worry if that means players). Overall, I would trust Smith to keep his authority as the head man in good control, however.
More than anything, I would like to see Smith get an excellent DC and recruiting coordinator. Only one FBS team on our schedule scored less than 36 points against us. That was Stanford, who was missing it's Heisman-caliber running back and still had not figured out its QB (I'm still not sure whether they have, but they look better since getting Costello in there). Yes, the Pac 12 is an offensive-minded conference, but you've gotta be able to play some sort of defense.
Recruiting? Obvious.

Agree about the EXTRA allocation to the grid iron. Needs to be DONE. I wouldn't worry ahelluvalot about the baseball team: PC is the MAIN fundraiser there, and has been for some time. I do worry a bit about women's hoops, volleyball, and softball. They are Up, UP, UP..and deserve proper funding. I'm JUST not sure men's hoops would spend the money wisely...Oops. I was being negative. OK

Don't think a full group of former OSU players/coaches is the right route, but I'd like to see Trent Bray and Keith Heyward in the mix. Me either! Get the best guys for the jobs! I think the D coordinator will be the key hire (needs experience, good recruiter that can get the most out of his talent, also needs to be a guy that J Smith can trust). What's Craig Bray doing?? JS has been apart of some good staffs (as individuals) and should have some connections. One of the things that Gary Andersen did fairly well was get assistants with good connections (Florida, Cali, some Poly players). Not saying their on field coaching was good but they had those recruiting connections. Obviously, if Smith can find some guys that can recruit Cali, Florida and Texas along with some Poly players, (and of course they are good on field coaches too) this will be huge! I would say try to get a diverse quality group. Look for guys who are truly passionate about their positions and coach in a different region or are from a different region of the country. Hopefully get a big named D coordinator or a younger up and coming guy that has some clout built already! If JS can leave the defense to the DC (and trust him to have the best interest of the program at heart), then he can focus a little more on offense with that staff and OC. Go Beavs!
