I don't like this for a lot of reasons. One, Mike Riley hasn't been an assistant coach at the collegiate level in a LONG time. Head Coaches usually have a control factor about them and it's part of the competitive personality. I have a very hard time believing that Mike Riley is not going to try and have a big influence on this team. And I don't see a guy like Jonathan Smith standing his ground or telling Riley "no". So who's team is it then? The other part here is that if Jonathan Smith wanted to show that he was ready to take on a program, he shouldn't need a guy like Riley officially on staff to be that cushion! First major mistake, in my eyes of JS' Coaching debut. Who's next? Mark Banker? Good effing God! Fool me once, shame on you! Fool me twice shame on me! Fool me three times.... Go Beavs! Lets look at this from another perspective. Point out to me another person more qualified to be an assistant HC than Riley right now. Point out another person more qualified to recruit to Corvallis. Point out another person more qualified to develop QBs. We can all wring our hands about the threat of a long time HC accepting a demotion... but that is Niner's job to worry about the dynamics. Gimmie a name of anybody in America, available right now, that is better.

Ha ha ha! This should make some posters heads explode! Something along the lines of: I don't know what his role is, and the head coach hasn't described it yet and we haven't played a game or even had a practice, but I've decided this is a BIG MISTAKE because our assistant head coach left us to go to the Chargers for a giant pay raise in 1998. #neverforget This should be fun.

Most head coaches have someone as an asst. HC that is around their age, their experience. JS has no HC experience but he could bring in someone who he trusts that he doesn't feel obligated to! At some point, my opinion is, this decision will come back to haunt him (JS). I wanted to see what he could do, with his own team. IMO, this is no longer his team. Go Beavs!

Mike Riley is 110% integrity. He is here to help and serve under Jonathan Smith and make Oregon State football competitive and winners. Simple as that. I'm confident Riley not only accepts the role, will flourish in it, and will do absolutely nothing to create conflict or overstep his bounds.
If this was a concern by JS for even a second he wouldn't have made the move. He has utmost faith in Mike Riley, as do I, as should all Beaver Fans. He's a great addition to the program. Despite his faults and failures, which there are few, he continues to be one of the most respected coaches in College football.

There is an old saying, "aren't we suppose to get better go along"? Go Beavs!

Wait.. are you saying that JS with no head coaching experience should bring in someone else with NO experience as his assistant HC? So we should go with rooks all the way around? How do you know he was obligated and doesn't trust MR? What age is the right age? What were your thoughts on Coach Chad K as our last associate head coach?

I get it is your opinion. and it is reasonable to worry about the dynamics. It is a real world threat. But again, looking at it logically, has Riley ever given an indication that he would let his ego get in the way of anything? Does he really strike you as a person that would try and wrestle control from Smith? I believe he would really embrace the chance to just go coach up some kids and leave the head aches to somebody else.

Why not put your feelings aside, embrace the direction JS is going to take this program and get behind it. What do you have to lose, and you just might gain a happier outlook : )

What's great about the events of this season. GA walked away from millions thus helping us tremendously.
Now Nebraska will be paying for our Assistant Head Coach. You couldn't ask for a better scenario from a financial perspective. LOL this is great.
