I believe we have now reached the "who cares" level of Beaver Football. Seems we have been here before and it lasted for one hell'va lot of time. Last night was pretty much the abyss. The fact the game thread is now 27 pages long might indicate otherwise. No one goes there nowadays, it's too crowded.

Togia drop of at least three totally catchable passes killed drives. A lot of hype but very little production. not much of a blocker (I'm being kind), not great hands... mainly looks the part of a TE. Hopefully we see Musgrave out there soon. We also REALLY could use Trevon Bradford back. I agree with this. A lot of the preseason banter about how good Oregon State could be included a healthy Bradford. I do not see anyone picking up the slack for Bradford in his absence, and, without Bradford, teams are keying on Hodgins a lot more than they should be able to. Right now, the weapons are Hodgins and Jefferson/Pierce. Togiai is still very inconsistent, 3 receptions for 18 yards on 6 targets. Flemings, Lindsey, and Taylor had a combined 15 receptions for 183 yards in 2018. Saturday, the three had 4 receptions for 43 yards on 10 targets. Hodgins went 7 receptions for 96 yards and a touchdown on 14 targets. That really should have been higher had Hodgins' 48-yard catch not been wiped out on that bogus offensive pass interference penalty. Luton looked good. It is always hard to look great with a bunch of flag-happy refs, when you are slinging the ball. If Luton is still struggling with a 100% Bradford off the Island, I might think about looking elsewhere.

So he drops/misses a lot of passes.

Someone smarter than me needs to explain why we can't/won't/don't get Pierce/Jefferson involved in the passing game (other than a predictable screen call on 3rd and 25). They seem like really good football players with the ball.

It looked to me like Luton looks Hodgins way, unless it's a designed play to another receiver or TE, of which maybe 5 were called.
Hodgins no doubt is a great option, but I didn't see too many throws by Luton to his 2nd or 3rd receiver.

Pierce does better, but doesn't catch the ball real well, neither would make you think Yvenson Bernard was in the backfield again.

Quitoriano? Smalls? Musgrave? Did any of those guys even play against Hawaii? I didn't notice them out there. You really have to wonder what the coaching staff is waiting for? Agree on Bradford. Lots of drops to go around Saturday night. Luton wasn't the only reason our offense stalled. Quitoriano has been out there a lot but his calling card is blocker. Smalls definitely played in week 1. Musgrave also was one of the 3-4 true freshman to play vs Ok State. No idea if Smalls/Musgrave played vs Hawaii. Makes what Hodgins has been doing for 2 weeks all the more impressive. First, as stated in previous thread(s) I think Gebbia should have gotten more meaningful time than he has so far. None based on 20/20 hindsight of what Luton has done. I think that if that had been in the works he would have replaced/gotten opportunities vs Hawaii. But, for whatever reason he did not... and I'm still hoping he gets some from here on out as he is the guy for 2+ years until we recruit someone better. I also think he is the more polished QB in the pocket from my brief exposure to seeing him play in scrimmages, and game 1. Coaches may lean Jake because of several factors, including chemistry with some receivers. My major issue after two games is that you can't 'coach' QB vision and spreading the ball around. It becomes forced and QBs then begin to think about where to throw and invariably throw late/make poor decisions. At this point Jake seems to have tunnel vision, seems jittery/pressing like he was performing for scouts. Gebbia has a natural flow to his game, seems to have his head on a swivel, and the newness of all receivers may serve him well. If you just let plays develop, read what's there, and not have an "ingrained" go to guy the ball is naturally spread around. I'll be extremely disappointed (can't imagine Gebbia's view!) if Gebbia doesn't at least 4 drives to show his stuff. Plus, watching sometimes "wakes" an athlete up. maybe Jake benefits from seeing plays from another angle?? That said... Hodgins doesn't do squat without someone delivering him the ball. and about half of is catches were in fairly tight to tight windows that gave him the chance for catches. Luton had a bad game. Jake needs to look off, find some touch, and use other receivers as in watching replays there are open plays to be made. But, Hodgins has also ran some poor routes (several cuts were rounded allowing defenders to recover and get inside) and has benefited from Jake throwing many good balls

Smalls at tight end, cause Togiai is still an athlete, not a football player. Togia drop of at least three totally catchable passes killed drives. A lot of hype but very little production. Hey, at least I don't think he got any drive killing penalties! (I don't think)

But, Hodgins has also ran some poor routes (several cuts were rounded allowing defenders to recover and get inside) and has benefited from Jake throwing many good balls Hodgins was targeted 16 times. 7 were catches for 96 yards and a touchdown. An eighth went for a first down on a 15-yard pass interference. 8 for 111 yards and a touchdown. I am betting that no one has a problem with those. First incompletion. Three receivers. No one was open. Luton threw short to try and give Hodgins a chance to either come back or draw a pass interference. Neither happened. Oregon State converted the third down play on a pass to Hodgins. Second incompletion. Hodgins wide open. Cordasco fell down trying to make a block. His man batted down the pass at the line. Oregon State converted the fourth down play on a pass to Hodgins. Third incompletion. Flea flicker. Hodgins had a step, but Luton underthrew it. (The ball ended up going about 55 yards in the air.) Hodgins was interfered with. It was not called. Hodgins still almost caught it. Really, Luton did what he could. No one else on the team throws that ball better. Bogus offensive pass interference penalty to wipe out a legitimate 48 yard gain. It should be 9 for 159 yards and a touchdown. Fourth incompletion. Threw high into coverage. Bad decision. At least three of the other receivers were better options. Although, only one other ran a route past the sticks. Fifth incompletion. Hodgins was open, and Luton threw high. It was a tough ball between layers of coverage. The TE was covered. It think that Luton may have assumed that it was a corner route, whereas Hodgins was running more of a dig to avoid the safety. Sixth incompletion. Hodgins was covered. The TE was wide open right behind Hodgins. He probably would have at least 20 yards, but Luton locked onto Hodgins early. Seventh incompletion. Five-man delayed blitz blew up the play. The LG whiffed on the block. Hodgins was really his only play. The other three receivers were covered. Bad play design. There was no safety valve.

Is that why the first drives of both games so far have been high caliber? Maybe need to rerun that script to get Luton and everyone else in sync. The AD hoc play making has not been very excellent.

Luton will start as he should and our backup will get plenty of reps as he should in this game.

I'm gonna say it. I've seen a LOT of QBs over the years throw a lot of bad passes in a game - Maybe it's my orange colored glasses, or the 6 pack of Ultra that was in the fridge, but I didn't see that Saturday night. Luton didn't kill us.
15 of 32 looks bad, but I saw several drops, several knockdowns and at least a few balls tossed short/long/out due to coverage. That stuff happens in football from time to time. QBs are always going to miss seeing a wide open guy, knockdowns and coverage dumps are generally the result of good defensive coverage or poorly run routes, and drops are generally not the fault of the QB.
I just didn't see Luton being the issue Saturday night. It was a close game, you leave the starter in unless he's struggling. I did see a bit of a stretch where I thought he was forcing things, perhaps they should have inserted Gebbia for a series, but that little stretch didn't determine the outcome of the game.
Hopefully this weekend we'll be up by 5 or more TDs at half and Gebbia gets the rest of the game, but it's not tome to change starters.
