Dave in Tumwater called the Joe Beaver Show on Monday to vote for Gebbia, then followed it up by saying "we were going on seven years of subpar quarterback play.....Mannion was half a quarterback because he couldn't run."
Luton is not subpar. McMaryion was not sub par. Mannion is an NFL QB.
I'm fine with Luton continuing to start, but if the offense sputters, we shouldn't hesitate to go with Gebbia.

McMaryion wasn't allowed to run until the Arizona game at the end of 2016. Other than that, I wouldn't necessarily argue with Dave.

Dave in Tumwater is one of the reasons that I can not stomach the Joe Beaver Show. If they could limit him to once per week, it may be tolerable, but he calls in almost every day just to hear himself talk. He is our own version of Beano Cook.

If running is required to be a whole quarterback, then most of the great quarterbacks in the history of the game wouldn’t make the cut. What he should’ve said is that we haven’t had a single quarterback in a long time. The GA years were marked with a platoon of quarterbacks. I rather like Smith’s vote of confidence with Luton. It suggests that the problems are not solely his—that his receivers and the OL need to carry their weight.

I don't believe it's all on Luton. He's a fine QB. I sort of equate this situation to a MLB pitcher. We'll use a perfectly decent starting pitcher like Wade Miley. Miley does a good job most of the time and has earned a spot in the starting rotation. But every once in a while, he gets lit up. Now, if you have zero confidence in your bullpen, you don't go get him early and maybe let him try to work out of it. But if you've got a solid bullpen option, you maybe don't let him face the lineup a second time but show the opposition a different look. I think that's what we have with Gebbia* *allegedly. I've seen him throw seven passes in my life. I'm going mostly off of what I've read from practice reports and what our head coach has said

I wonder if it's more akin to Wade Miley throwing strikes which are put into play by the opposing team and the infield not getting the put outs. I wonder if its the infielders who are struggling right now, and placing a different pitcher in there might not change that fact. Anyway, that's what I'd like to believe.

Except in real life Miley gets shelled... not ground balls to infielders... 12 ER in his last 0.2 IP? A record of some kind I think...

I don’t think it’s a lack of confidence in Gebbia, I just don’t think football coaches think in these terms with QBs. Most of the time it takes a Miley-esque performance by a QB before a change is made, even a temporary one. I’m no football expert, but sometimes I wonder if giving a kid a series or two to observe from the sidelines could clear his head and slow him down, or likewise having a different voice who sees the game slightly differently might give the offense a temporary sharpening of focus or a shot of energy. We have no problem putting second stringers in for a series or a few downs at any other position, why is QB so different?

Last time was a 2 week road trip where I drove Portland to John Day to Wenatchee and back; had to endure it, but man it drove me to find other things to listen to. In a way thanks Dave in Tumwater, Last Podcast on the Left and Hardcore History are great.

Personally I don't think a change will be made unless Luton starts having multiple INTS or is flat out going rogue ala Katz. I liked what i have seen from Gebbia, but I would bet a shiny quarter he is more prone to forcing plays and turning the ball over than Luton.

Luton should start.. but I dont think it will matter as Gebbia should get plenty of playing time also since i think OSU will be ahead by enough to allow that to happen

See the memo. *edit* actually coaches do accede to fan, media, booster pressure to play the backup qb all the time. What am i saying.

Who started? Why was there a poll? And why did 67% vote for the wrong guy?

Who started? Why was there a poll? And why did 67% vote for the wrong guy? I know today’s opponent was not equivalent to the others that we faced this year, but I’d say that the team took a big step forward today. Love it. And you’re right: no need for a poll.
