“Is this the most talented team in college football? Probably”
Joey Bosa’s little brother Nick continues the family tradition of harassing QBs, and they are basically loaded. Maybe first-time starting QB Dwayne Haskins takes awhile to start clicking. Sure hope so.
Even the most orange-colored glass-wearers among us has to admit that this could be over before the opening kickoff. The talent, experience, winning tradition and proven coaching talent create on paper a huge mismatch. As they say, there’s a reason that they play the games, but I would submit that in our case the main reason is a nice fat payoff.
I feel strangely at peace with the concept of finding little victories inside of the game. There is a freedom in not expecting too much in the opener. I can’t remember the last time that I didn’t expect too much in the opener (1997?). Just getting to be in that stadium with my son will be sweet. We’ll have a chance to see a lot of athletes who have a chance to make a lot of money playing beyond college, a team that should be in the College Playoff in December, and to get an early peek at the Beavs. I pray that we’ll come out of that game with a healthy squad and a starting point from their experience that launches them toward a goal of progressively closing the gap between our program and the best ones around - particularly in the PAC 12. I seldom have much use for “moral victories”, but if our team plays hard (and as a team) through the final seconds, demonstrate fundamentally-pure technique and we make some stellar plays periodically to spark some confidence moving forward, I’ll be happy.
It’s JS and staff’s job to prepare these guys to have their best chance to succeed, and I want our players to plan to go for it on every play with every intention of winning. However, at the end of the day - although the outcome is pretty well imminent - we realistically need to be most concerned with creating an identity as to who we want to be as a football team. If we can remotely do that, JS will have done more for us in one brutal game than GA did in 2 1/2 seasons.
