Joe Kapp was hired as Cal's head coach in 1982. It was his first coaching job at any level. In 5 years he went 20–34–1. I recall an OSU/Cal game I attended in one of 83/84/85, where one of our sad sack OSU teams beat Cal. Maybe that was the game that got him fired. I'd say the landscape of college football is a bit different today than it was back in 1982. Lots more money on the line, and lots more scrutiny. Yes! It was 1984! One of, if not the best flyovers I've ever been to. Low, low, low, with full afterburners from everybody's back. Everyone ducked simultaneously. And....we won, 9-6!!!

The local Kiwanis took a bus-load of Jr. High/ HS kids down to games each year back in those years. Those were the first times I had ever stepped foot on the OSU campus. Just one of the many examples of how sports can be / is the "front porch" of the University.

On Coach Hall, I love him. He has turned a dismal season of discontent into one with hope and enthusiasm, props to him. The problem with even considering him for the job is that the position OSU is in, they HAVE to make a great hire. A solid hire, someone with a proven track record to even get back to 7-8 win seasons. They can't afford to take a flyer on an unknown, no matter how he seems to have turned things around in short order. This is my opinion only of course. I appreciate everything Coach Hall is doing and hope he makes his way up the coaching ladder. If fate allows, maybe someday he returns in the Head Coaching role. But not now.

Coach Hall is doing his best and it seems to be working for the most part. I like some of the changes being made in technique and in personnel but I don't think he should be the next head coach. I think it's improvements, coupled with being in the right place at the right time. Colorado is obviously down this season and it was a home game. Stanford is completely one dimensional and their O Line is not as strong as it has been in years past. To be fair, the Beavs made some good breaks on the ball and if they could have finished, probably could have had 5-6 picks last night. Then again, if Chryst could have hit the side of a barn last night, there were some wide open misses! Would, could, should but didn't! And we lost a well fought, competitive game.
The assistant coach and coordinator thing (in my opinion) weighs heavily against guys with little to no experience of head coaching in FBS or any HC exp at all! You have to wonder who they could even get to come in and be coordinators? Experience? Experience within this conference (as a coordinator)? The assets and coordinators that get brought in, also need to be able to recruit well. There are a lot of factors where experience can be vital! Not saying we can't have a youthful under experienced guy take the reigns....just food for thought.
I think whoever is hired (if not Hall) as the next HC, should definitely retain Hall and Lockette as a coordinator and/or position coaches!
Go Beavs!

While I agree that its hard to find someone with Hall's inexperience getting a HC job in college football; it happens in basketball a decent number of times.
I'm of the opinion that being a coordinator or HC at a smaller school is overrated especially if a guy spent time playing in the NFL where players do far more to prep for games than guys who only played college ball ever did. I have no idea if Hall has the connections to assistants he would need but if he does I wouldn't have a huge issue giving him the gig. I think he'd be a great recruiter and as long as he can get a quality staff/manage said staff I think he could make a quality HC without needing more coaching experience.

I think if we don't hire Hall, we will regret it down the road. I think the next outsider who comes in lays a fat egg like GA did

I suspect retaining Hall in a role that is not HC will be tough, depending on his personality. It seems pretty likely that he'll be able to leverage this experience into a full-time HC job, even if at a lower level - he's a competitive guy, and so unlikely to want to take a step backwards in responsibility. The only way I see this working is if our AD becomes sold with the much of the remaining staff returning in their current roles, and keeping Hall as the HC also would mean retaining them. And frankly, if this team ends up winning a couple of games, including throttling hole, it's going to be very tough for the AD to derail that momentum with a total overhaul of the coaching staff again. It's the tough spot that interim coaches (and the often realized play quality bump they get) put ADs. in. While I'm excited about what Hall has accomplished, I also don't read a whole lot into what it could translate into over 5 years in the role. That said, after our experience with a 'proven' HC in GA, I'm not sure retaining Hall is less of a crapshoot then whomever else we bring it. I'm glad my job here is just to ponder it on a message board.

The game that got Kapp fired was his 1986 game in Seattle against Washington, which the Huskies won 50-18. He unzipped his pants while being asked questions by the Seattle media. Shortly thereafter, California notified Kapp that he would not coach in 1987. Oregon State beat California 14-12 in Berkeley in 1986, the Beavers' first win in Berkeley since 1969. Kapp lost the next five, but upset #16 Stanford in the "Win one for the Zipper" game, 17-11. Kapp finished 3-2 against Stanford and was carried out of the stadium after the game. Fun fact #1. Joe Kapp was California's head coach in 1982 and the architect of "The Play." Fun fact #2. When Joe Kapp was hired by California, he promised that he would not drink tequila until the Bears went to the Rose Bowl. California still has not played in the Rose Bowl. Kapp has lived up to his promise and switched to rum.

Don't recall much about his coaching results even though I've always felt like we had Cal's number more than any other PACxx team during the long losing streak. I'm hoping that continues a week from Saturday.

the position OSU is in, they HAVE to make a great hire.
================================
What if Cory is the great hire?
Last night impressed me far more than the Colorado game. That could be chalked up to emotion, etc., a one-game flash in the pan.
Last night, he had extra days to prepare the team to face a superior opponent competing for a divisional title, who had everything to play for, who had steamrolled 3 of its past 4 opponents, and had added time to prepare for us. We were prepared, we played unbelievably hard, and our guy clearly outcoached Shaw.
Our players absolutely love him. They are playing their hearts out for him. Read their twitters.
I'd have no problem with Cory being hired. None whatsover.

I'm trying to remember the last "interim" coach who took over a program and actually did well.
I recall the WVA guy who coached a win in their bowl game and was retained. That action was roundly criticized.
Helton seemed like a bad idea for a team with the cachet of USC.
I'm sure it has worked out somewhere, but I'm not recalling it.

Dabo Swinney has worked out for Clemson. And the parallel's are fairly similar, He'd never been more than a position coach prior to taking over.
