If Les Miles wants this job, this is Dennis Erickson coming calling again. He will stay for 4-5 years and the program will be in immensely better shape when he leaves than it was when he came in, overall. Everyone should be emailing Scott Barnes and telling him if he can get Les Miles and doesn't, we are going to burn him in effigy for the rest of all days.... I agree 100%. he is not a long term hire. But he will, in the minimum, get the defense fix and start the process of improving offense. He is immediately a credible, big name that will immediately raise our recruiting profile. Our 4* QB commit ain't gonna waiver if we hire Miles. defensive prospects will suddenly listen. If he did one thing real well, it was put defenders in the NFL. Miles will get this team back to a regular winner and be in a very good position for the next guy. As I mentioned... instant NATIONAL cred on every front. Other than knowing if he's truly interested and in our budget, my main concern is that he doesn't seem to be a personality that Barnes would gravitate towards?! But, he liked GA so maybe a sarcastic, pompous, but high profile and far more successful coach would be to his liking?! Way about Prez Ray? Is Miles his style?

The Miles rumor really makes no sense to me. Unless there are skeletons in his closet preventing it, Miles could've had a P5 job this year or next year at much more promising places than OSU. His son plays for Nebraska, at least a connection there for that soon to be open job. The guy has spent his entire life in Big 10 (MI, OH), Big 12 (OK, Colo), SEC (LSU), NFL (Dallas) territory, why would he come out west at the tail end of his career? At least Erickson had connections to the PAC10 and the Northwest. This story makes more sense if he's already talking to another school and just wants to leverage OSU for a better offer, which I believe is the case more so than he has any genuine interest in OSU. Happy to be wrong, but I don't believe we'll ever come close to seeing Miles on the OSU sideline. I bet Miles couldn't find Corvallis on a map.

The story circulating is that he was brought in under the guise of being a consultant in the coaching search - be that as it may, reputable sources are still stating that Miles was confirmed as being in Corvallis. Legend goes that Mitch Barnhardt called DE to ask his opinion on a coach from the Erickson/Sweeney/Jack Elway tree and St. Dennis asked "hey what about me?" so it's not without precedent.

I looked it up because I've always thought their offense sorta sucked, but he's had numerous years where their offense was top 20 and/or averaged over 30 ppg And... people forget his offenses were going against some of the top D's in the country year in and year out, not the namby pamby D's of the Pac12. I 'd love to see a nasty D beating the s%#te out of Pac12 opponents and averaging mid to high 20's and up on offense and still at a +7 to 10 point differential . I'm not buying the namby pamby comment completely. I think we forget about officiating. In the PAC 12 they and we expect big offensive displays and less defensive prowess. That could negatively affect that style in PAC 12 play. At least to begin with. I am all for safety and I think some of the new defensive rules are absolutely necessary; however, I do think the PAC 12 officials seem to go a bit overboard during conference play. One that was very disturbing to me was the ruffing the QB call in the 4th quarter last week. It would have been almost impossible to stop from hitting the QB in that situation. The call for targeting on Bright was a bit questionable also, except I at least that one followed the rule. He didn't lead with his helmet though, the action on the field caused that movement as much or more than he did. Anyway, my point is Miles defenses may suffer a bit at least at first with PAC 12 officiating.

He could be leveraging this for a better offer, but here’s my analysis of Miles and the current openings: Ole Miss - self imposed scholarship sanctions (15 over 4 years), with further NCAA sanctions looming. He want THAT kind of rebuild right now? Maybe if he is dead set on staying in the south. Tennessee - wants a big name, and they feel they have the resources to hang onto a big time hire. They won’t get Gruden, but perhaps Frost or Norvell? I didn’t think Norvell would be high in their list, but then I read this today: footballscoop.com/news/mike-norvells-buyout-not-keep-leaving-memphis/Florida - nope. They desire some serious offense Nebraska - Scott Frost or bust. Les would probably be interested, but would Moos hire a guy like Les? Leach to UN? A&M: possibly...no clue what they want, but they aren’t making a move until the end of the season which gives us leverage (here’s the offer, accept or don’t). Les would need a good reason to refuse based on his contract with LSU Arkansas: again, possibly. I have no clue what they would be looking for. OSU: patient with HC, gives them ample time to rebuild. Les has a teenager at home still, I believe. I can think of way worse places to raise a kid than in Corvallis. He wants to coach a program that is dedicated to winning. If Barnes and Ray make him that promise, he will listen. Now that I think of it, maybe I should email those two and tell them to pursue this dude already...

While Miles would be interesting I think I'd hire Tedford over him. I wonder about Miles lack of west coast experience and how much he really wants to rebuild a program. I don't question his pedigree but his LSU contract does require him to be trying to get another job so I wonder how much of his interest is just about being able to prove to LSU he is looking. Tedford on the other hand has the west coast experience and seems much more inclined to want to rebuild a program.
Now obviously I'd talk to Miles but at the end of the day I think I'd hire Tedford over him. Both are fantastic coaches and both have track records as recruiters. And my guess is that neither will be OSU's coach next season.

I don’t get the need for west coach connections, particularly when he has a Rolodex of potential assistants to call on to fill that void (if it exists). If he were a coordinator with no HC experience? Sure, but we are talking about a guy who has national exposure, and in a good way. I wouldn’t think twice about taking Les over Tedford, not even for a second.

Had Tedford got a similar level of job (say USC after Carroll left) I bet he'd have produced similar results to Miles at LSU. To be clear, I am in no way downgrading Miles, I am just saying how much I respect Tedford.

You really piqued my interest when you asked; "Leach to UN"? I have not thought about the implications of the other PAC 12 schools losing their current coaches at the end of this season. UCLA could certainly be looking at a new HC?! If Leach left, there's two programs that could be in for some turbulence (although many would say UCLA is already there)? I'm not sure ASU still doesn't go in another direction either after this season, even with some impressive wins lately. Anyone missing?? Point being, whoever does come to Oregon State could be on level ground with a couple of other programs if they are set to rebuild/change regimes as well. Obviously there's no guarantees but it's an intriguing thought to me at least. PS- I'm not saying that those other programs would be reduced to the same exact situation as Oregon State. I'm saying that starting over with a new staff sometimes takes a few seasons to really get going, even for a good team (there's attrition, scheme/tech changes, personnel differences, recruiting differences, etc). Therefore, it wouldn't be "the new guy" at Oregon State versus a 10 or 11 other programs that have staffs that have been there for a while! Go Beavs!

What about Miles convinced you that he isn't "inclined to want to rebuild a program"? Just curious. Every fired coach that didn't negotiate a settlement less than the contract due has to look for work to offset the cost to the firing school. So Les is not different than Mark Helfrich in that regard.

As for your claim that I have "Tedford mania", while that is just nonsense. Neither guy would be my top target. I was simply comparing the 2 of them. If I had the power I'd hire Norvell, Wilcox, and Sanford Jr. before I'd hire either of Tedford or Miles. I simply said (and it is my opinion) that I'd hire Tedford over Miles. I can't prove a negative so its impossible for me to prove Miles wouldn't be amazing at OSU, just more a feeling I get.

Les Miles might be the best available coach in America right now (unless Ohio State is really pissed at Urban Meyer for losing to Iowa the way they did)

I would think that the key issue really boils down to "resources" and "control" - if the University can meet Miles' expectations, I would have no doubt that he would take the gig in the exact same way that Leach took the Washington State job. Give him the resources and autonomy that he wants and at the end of the day it's a P5 job. There aren't a lot of those and frankly the bar is set pretty damn low at Oregon State these days... pressure is off for sure, as long as you can get what you need.

A few comments from previous posts
I don't know that OK State when Miles was there was all that different than Cal in terms of where they were on the totem pole of college football at the time. Perhaps Tedford had the opportunity to jump ship like Miles did, I don't recall. Probably regrets not doing it if he did!
Can't see Leach going to Nebraska. There is nothing about that move that fits for either party.
I personally don't think Miles wants to coach in the SEC any more. I've heard his comments broadcasting, I actually got the impression he wanted to coach in the Big 10, and would listen to lower tier job openings.
I also think Miles is completely defensive oriented. He had Gundy at OK state, Jimbo Fischer initially at LSU, then guys like Cameron, Crowton. Basically guys he could hand the offense off too. OK, hire Miles and now go get Beau Baldwin!
Why would he come out west? First off, west coast is best coast. And specifically, look around the Pac 12. It's a place you can turn a program around rather quickly. He could build a Stanford type team at OS in a few years, it's not top heavy with programs. Expectations aren't nearly as high to win a NC every year like in the SEC. In fact, watch, if Harbaugh doesn't win the Big 10 in the next two years, they are going to run him off too. I bet there's a lot of coaches that have been around the bloc and are looking at what Leach has done/is doing at WSU thinking, hell yeah, that looks like fun.
From Miles perspective, he's been to the top, he's dealt with that pressure. And maybe he wants that again or enjoys it. Or maybe he thinks hey I could go to OSU and win 9 or 10 games, maybe compete for a Pac 12 championship, maybe pull a Dennis Erickson Donkey out my ass, but worst case scenario, get them over the hump and I'm a hero, with none of the bulls%#t you'd have to deal with at a top 10 program.

But all those young guys see OSU as a stepping stone, ultimately. They are upwardly mobile, and young, and big $$$$ and big ego will eventually come in to play.
So I have always liked the "come home to roost" prospect, even if he's a little bit worn. I don't think Tedford jump ships here for a better gig, I don't think Miles jumps ship here. He's 63, like OA said, 5 years, maybe a few more, but does he really want to be coaching at 70? Not many do.
