We seem to have a smoking gun for the rumor. IF San Antonio gets a team, Mike Riley COULD be in play, as he has a home there and vacations there a lot. a multiple chain of ifs, became "Riley is leaving to coach an upstart pro team"

AAF is announcing its final team location tomorrow. Based on twitter speculation, it seems the cities most likely to land the final spot are Oakland, St. Louis, or San Antonio.

What other cities are up for consideration? Mike Riley has more ties in San Antonio or Corvallis??? Pretty obviously Corvallis...
As a football / Beaver fan if this happens my reaction will be, "meh"
As a human who thinks highly of Mike Riley as a fellow human, father, grandfather, etc... I would be pretty disappointed...

He has a home near San Antonio and apparently summers there a lot and has openly talked about retiring there. I could see that as a hopeful possibility for the angrybeavs crowd.

Indeed, that same Wikipedia article says that the league will have eight teams, but only seven locations are selected as of right now.
I have a RL friend with some social ties to the OSU football program. He is saying that MR to this new league is a done deal and that it will be announced soon. Take that for what you will, but he's been generally right with this kind of info in the past. He just relayed this information to me a few minutes ago.

If this all comes to fruition, the only thing I think it says about Riley is that he very clearly still wants to be a head football coach. I don't think you want to start throwing blanket statements out there like "all grandparents who choose to live further from their grandchildren than necessary are worse at grandparenting." I think it'd be a bit of a blow to OSU football RIGHT NOW if he were to leave - we aren't going to be able to replace his wealth of knowledge and skill as a talent evaluator for $50K, but Riley is not the future of OSU football. Smith, Tibesar, Lindgren, Bray, etc.....that's the future.

Smith, Tibesar, Lindgren, Bray, etc.....that's the future. It is a short term blow. He is a wealth of knowledge, in particularly about the recruiting landscape here on the west coast and in the Pac-12. edit: I'll also say, if he does leave, it might be for the best. Even among our own fans, we are having a hard time recognizing Smith as the head coach. We are attributing many things to Riley's influence. That $50K a year TE coach is casting a huge shadow on Smith.

And in general a person who puts out an image of honest, loyal and family oriented just to go back on his own word... It would put a big dent in Mike Riley's reputation, in my opinion. I understood the other two times he left, and neither time was there an under current from him that this was his final job like there was this time... I was pretty ambivalent about the hire in the first place, so Beaver Football wise I don't think it is that big of a deal. The only thing that might be difficult is the big discount we were getting from him... Hopefully Scott Barnes ponies up and we get someone great.

Except for my children (if they ask my advice), I have no business telling someone else what's best for them.
If MR thinks this is the best deal for him and takes it, then good for him, best of luck, and I won't think any less of him. We'll find somebody else to take his spot, and move on.

Having Mike Riley on staff for the coaching transition is/was (depending on how this turns out) a great thing, but it's not an end all deal if he's gone. This first 6 months was probably the most important part of new head coach Smith's coaching career so far, and a lot of good has happened and Riley was probably a big part of that. It looks like we have a very good staff lined up, they're putting things in place, in my mind recruiting has been crazy good - from salvaging a decent class in a little over a month's time to having a really nice class developing for next year.. all without playing a down.
If Riley is gone, we've got the pieces in place to catch the attention of another good candidate as a TE coach. It's all good.

I'd be disappointed in him. He and JS probably have an agreement about such things, but .....
