Looks like the WFL/USFL/World League/Arena League/XFL all over again. These cities are not going to fill their stadiums for minor league football. They'll get desperate when they see the small crowds, get over extended on salaries to try to drum up interest with past-their-prime players (they're already doing that by hiring washed up coaches) and it will implode. Thank goodness, Portland, the king of minor league sports, isn't involved in this fiasco. Same song, different verse, wash and repeat. Timing is bad, NFL is losing fans, Canadian football league and NCAA are also seeing attendance declines, not to mention lower football interest in high schools and youth leagues. TV deal with CBS sounds good, but that doesn't mean anyone will watch.

What a strange turn of events! But perhaps it is for the better. I like the idea that JS will be rebuilding HIS team, without folks speculating how much of the success can be attributed to MR. If we had the confidence in JS to hire him as head coach, having MR around only complicates things.
Good luck, Mike! Go coach in the fake NFL. But remember—San Antonio is closer to Nebraska than Corvallis.

Don't need the drama. Buhbye Yeah, that drama from a rumor yesterday to 3 whole pages by tonight must be tearing this team apart at the seams!

Well, if true, beat it. Seems desperate and misguided. Ego can be a terrible cloud to good decision making. J Smith will be fine if this is true. So odd and disappointing. He was so genuinely happy at the recruiting dinner. Too bad. Door is closed. Tight.

'Aw Shucks' Some people are real. Some people are good. Some people are fake and some people are real good at being fake.
Riley's philosophy....

I would like riley to stay for at least one season. But I do not want speculation for a week or two. Either take the job or don't. Either you are here or not. Some kids out there probably think he's the damn head coach and is considering leaving.

Riley has never been ‘anywhere’. He’s always looking to create a legacy that exists only in his mind. He’s the worst kind of employee, he understands he has failed over and over again, so he is searching for the ‘lightning in a bottle’, which comes with being an innocent bystander in a success story. I am embarrassed for my Alma Mater and for our ‘so called’ athletic program. We need to get rid of Scott Barnes NOW and appoint someone that has actually built a successful program and added value. Until OSU gets serious, it’s difficult to support this AD or anything that he is behind. Have no idea how he ever got hired if anyone looked at his resume’ and did reference checks. Please use this riley departure as a stepping stone to creating excellence, not rewarding incompetence. I am sure that Barnes would hire riley back, again, after he fails in this new ‘bad idea’ league, where they will probably re-do all of the idiocy from all of the other recent attempts. If Riley thinks this is a good idea... it illustrates his poor judgement in recent years. Sad to witness...

Well, if you are Mike Riley, I believe he has a retirement home in San Antonio, so this makes it so he can scratch his coaching itch while settling in there. This latest OSU gig of his always struck me as kind of weird and left me with mixed feelings. I want JS to create his own culture, and to succeed or fail on his own merits. I also think there could be a weird power structure emerge, where you have a very new head coach, and a very senior ex-head coach as an assistant, and while the two of them might have it all worked out in their heads, there are 100+ other people who have to deal with that ambiguity. I also felt like we were doing enough harkening back to our "glory days" (Bruce Springsteen reference) with the JS hire, and might have been pushing the boundaries with Riley in the picture as well.
On the other hand, Riley brings a ton of cred and experience to the party, etc. etc. (assume I reiterated all sorts of positive reasoning here).
I would just like the situation to be made clear quickly, and not influence recruiting or program administration any longer than it needs to.....
One of the head coaches who left Corvallis in a rush just to find the real world to have its own downsides (either Erickson or Riley, I believe Riley) had this saying "If you are happy, stay happy" when describing the "mistake" they made in leaving. I just wish they could listen to their own advice.
Go Beavers!

That was DE’s quote. Riley’s was ‘if you can’t create your own success, find someone else’s to take credit for... I will forever look for those types of opportunities, I am a man on the move - but, I am not sure there is any rationale for my wanderlust. I have come to realize that ‘money is not everything... it’s much more than that - although I can’t think of another word to describe it.’
