Reno? That's an easy and obvious road trip....what I really want to know is how many are thinking of traveling back to Columbus to see the Beavs play in the Horseshoe. Friends I know that have seen games there say it's a must road trip. I'm going to start looking into that one I think.

There is no good reason to play that game. Just setting Smith up for failure in year one. So mad that game is on the schedule personally, I would never support such poor scheduling by attending. Reno, I might consider that one.

I have no problem with going to the horseshoe. #1 it will be considered an impossible win for them, so nothing will be expected. #2 I am sure it will be a money maker for the school and for football. #3 I went to Penn State, Wisconcin, Michigan, LSU, Minnesota and have been entertained every time. The only folks I thought were out of line were some of the Michigan fans, but what can you expect form a fan base with Harbaugh at the helm. We should have won at LSU and I am not so sure we shouldn't have won at Minnesota. Yes, we will most likely lose big time, but the game is set at this point. I go and support the football team, especially with it being Smith's first game as H.C.

I have nothing but gut feeling to back me up but I’ll bet J Smith wants to play that game.

Nothing like a welcome to college football by getting curb stomped on a national stage...absolutely no good will come of playing that game, not even worth the money.

Wow...didn't expect that response. I also went to LSU, Michigan......good times. Corvallis fans need to get out and see more of the college football landscape. It's a pretty fun world out there.....and yeah, Beavs get beat down...so be it......what I remember most about my times in Baton Rouge have nothing to do with the football game.

Given the paucity of talent as the PSU game showed, we really have no business tackling tOSU at this time. Maybe get UTEP to go along with a home and home in 2018/19 to give us an opponent we're on equal footing with, then climb the competition ladder after that. Offer tOSU a visit in 2020 for their season opener in exchange. That'll be our best shot at an upset.

The guy with BELIEVE as his signature is begging us to get out of a game because we are gonna lose.
There's no reason NOT to play this game. You tell the team that this is where we're trying to get, this is how a first rate college football team operates, so take notes.
I don't care if we're playing Santiam Christian week one, we aren't going to a bowl game next year. Best case scenario is probably beating Nevada and SUU then picking up two or three conference wins. There is literally nothing to lose by playing that game. We could lose 100-0 and Spanky (my friend's nickname for Jonathan Smith as a QB) would still have a five year deal.
Hell, before the press conference I might've bought that a "welcome to the big leagues, rookie" would rattle Smith, but after the way he owned that press conference, I think he's way more ready for this moment than any of us gave him credit for.
Additionally, we'd lose out on $1.8M plus whatever it costs to break that contract plus whatever we'd have to pay someone to come into Reser next year on short notice. There's no way that will be made up by an extra home game against George Fox, which is what it sounds like who y'all want to play so we can be 1-0. If we're going to make a "mighty investment" or whatever Scott Barnes called it in the assistant coaches salary pool, I don't think we can afford to be tossing money out the window so we don't get our feelings hurt.

Just fyi but your own "best case scenario" of beating SUU, Nevada, and 3 conference wins would be enough for a Bowl game if they replaced Ohio State with someone beatable so its a little silly to say we aren't going to a Bowl game next year than describe a scenario that would resulting a Bowl game if only they find an easier opponent than Ohio State. Look, if you think getting your assed kicked in your first game coming off a terrible season doesn't have the ability to derail everything Smith sells the players this offseason that is your opinion but I couldn't disagree more. These kids getting their asses kicked yet again does them no good in the short or long term. They need success and they needed it ASAP. And sorry but Smith can't tell his team "this is how a first rate program operates so take notes" he absolutely 100% has to tell them that they can beat them. Even if he knows its not true, that has to be what he tells the players so when they get crushed it won't be about the "notes" they took, it will be yet another failure. I happen to agree with Dennis Erickson's philosophy, I need a tough OOC game like I need a hole in my eye.

If our team is going to pack it in after one loss in a game everyone expects them to lose, things aren't getting better any time soon no matter what.

If our team is going to pack it in after one loss in a game everyone expects them to lose, things aren't getting better any time soon no matter what. You are entitled to that opinion. I disagree. Psychology matters in sports and starting off with a win vs. a loss can make a big difference. You are correct that you never know or can prove one way or the other what difference that early game makes but IMO a scheduling policy that led moving the Stanford game up to week one in 2008 (probably cost Riley his Rose Bowl), led to playing TCU to open 2010, etc.... has cost this team Bowl positioning in the past. Foolish scheduling is unacceptable to me. You are okay with it. Cool, all I said originally is no way in hell will I support such a game scheduling policy by attending such a game.

Would you consider a 17-7 halftime score and a 35-17 final score as an ass-kicking? Just curious. Nope but if they give that kind of performance than I would consider a wasted opportunity to actually get a win because if they give that kind of performance than they are good enough to win 3-4 conference games and playing Ohio State may be the difference between going bowling and not going bowling. There is just no upside to the game (barring a miracle and winning and if they do that I will gladly eat all the crow in the world)
